“Always dream and shoot higher than you know you can do. Don’t bother just to be better than your contemporaries or predecessors. Try to be better than yourself.” - William Faulkner

Important vs. urgent
So many times, I’ve heard the advice, “you’ve got to sort out what’s important, and what’s urgent. Then prioritize the important stuff - don’t get caught up in the urgent.” But I was never able to figure out how to do this. The urgent stuff is barking in my face, and has deadlines attached. Can I ignore it, set it aside?
What’s important? My...

We grow partially
“We do not grow absolutely, chronologically. We grow sometimes in one dimension, and not in another; unevenly. We grow partially. We are relative. We are mature in one realm, childish in another. The past, present, and future mingle and pull us backward, forward, or fix us in the present. We are made up of layers, cells, constellations.”
― Anaïs Nin

The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.

Taste the fruit
“Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up. And when it happens that you are broken, or betrayed, or left, or hurt, or death brushes near, let yourself sit...

It's not about me
I put a lot of time and thought into being a good teacher. I try to make the material interesting, the activities engaging, and to keep everyone moving in the same direction as one big happy family. But at this point in the term, the little frustrations start creeping in.
Students start skipping class, making excuses, turning papers in late. Penalties are no deterrent, and I start to feel...

Resigned but not defeated
It’s early in the morning, and I’m putting the finishing touches on the latest draft of my dissertation. Later today, I will give it a final proofread, and distribute it to my committee.
This document (or “the damned thing,” as it’s known to some of my friends - we all have those moments when we hate our diss) has been through a million revisions already, and...

Nurture your dream
“Be careful what you water your dreams with. Water them with worry and fear and you will produce weeds that choke the life from your dream. Water them with optimism and solutions and you will cultivate success. Always be on the lookout for ways to turn a problem into an opportunity for success. Always be on the lookout for ways to nurture your dream.” - Lao Tzu

The Animal School
I love this little fable by George Reavis - a good reminder that we each have our gifts.
- Flynn
_____
Once upon a time the animals decided they must do something heroic to meet the problems of a “new world” so they organized a school. They had adopted an activity curriculum consisting of running, climbing, swimming and flying. To make it easier to administer the curriculum, all the animals...

Do what works
There are so many different kinds of writing and so many ways to work that the only rule is this: do what works. Almost everything has been tried and found to succeed for somebody. The methods, even the ideas of successful writers contradict each other in a most heartening way, and the only element I find common to all successful writers is persistence-an overwhelming determination to succeed.

Say yes
“Take the stupidest thing you’ve ever done. At least it’s done. It’s over. It’s gone. We can all learn from our mistakes and heal and move on. But it’s harder to learn or heal or move on from something that hasn’t happened; something we don’t know and is therefore indefinable; something which could very easily have been the best thing in our lives, if only...
